Race report 2013
The
Inveraray Bluebell trail run which broke from Inveraray Jail on Sunday was the
largest field so far in the races four year history. Local runners from Mid
Argyll were joined by competitors from Dunoon, Campbeltown, Glasgow and
Helensborough amongst others. Also running were members of D Company 7Scots recreating
a historic wartime training exercise. The inaugural children’s race was
supported by a small but select group of runners who all performed extremely
well and tackled the rough trail course with enthusiasm and energy. Joseph
Harper of Lochgilphead, a seasoned athlete stormed around the 3k course in
14.05 followed by Lochgair’s Rachael Johnston, the first girl to finish, second
overall in 16.59. Ormsary’s Ruby Bosomworth was third in, second in the 10-13
female category in 18.00. Ben Davidson (20.17) also from Ormsary took the 1st
in the 6-9 category closely followed by local runner Tilly Cunningham, 1st
girl. Third in the 10-13yrs was Brooke Gallagher (22.54) followed by Kian
Gallagher second 6-9yr (23.05). Lauren Rooney was second 6-9 girls(24.48).
Whilst the children were listening to Argyll Brass playing and enjoying much
needed tablet provided by Shannon at Argyll Adventure, and bananas and water
donated by Kathy and David Owen at Londis for the adult competitors the hill
run proper was underway with a vengeance. As the middle runners were still
making their way up the main section of the 236m high hill twin brothers Grant
and Iain Cairns (Springburn Harriers) were chasing down towards the finish.
Grant was overall winner (31.33) and Iain (32.39) second. Third over the line
was Martin Cornish (33.04) the first of many prizewinners from Helensborough’s
SOS Fitness Group. With the first three male seniors home the battle commenced
amongst the Veterans. Iain MacNicol (37.43) from Lochgilphead got over the line
first taking the jogscotland first finisher prize and First male veteran.
Second male veteran Garret Corner (40.20) finished well after a fall at the top
of the very slippery hill making him the first Inveraray male. Colin Burton (41.55)
continued the SOS fitness prize roll coming in third MV. Mid Argyll Triathlon
club’s Bill Halliday took the prize for the, new this year male super veteran
category (40.13) with Newhaven trialthon club’s Richard Arnot (42.53) second.
The female race was heavily dominated by the ladies from SOS Fitness but locals
did manage to keep them from the most coveted first over the line spot which
was taken by Dinah Bosomworth (39.53), Ormsary in a fantastic time, second over
was local Inveraray jogscotland runner Freya Corner (40.07) who had a very good
run winning the female junior prize and first Inveraray Female. Then those
Helensborough ladies started to fly over the finish line. Donna Humphries was
first senior female (41.28) with Sandra Houldsworth (42.33), Kilbarchan. Karen
Gallagher (46.31-SOS fitness) was accompanied over the line by several
enthusiastic young supporters to a third FS placing. Claiming second female veteran
prize behind Dinah was Gail Losh (44.37-SOS Fitness), and third was Allyson
McCulloch (44.53-SOS Fitness). The Female super veteran category was well
supported with Alexandra Hope (43.15-SOS fitness) first, Margaret Sinclair
(47.21)from Campbeltown running club second and Charmain Campbell(48.58)
Ormsary Jogscotland third. Despite the increasing rain competitors cheered and
clapped the members of D Company 7scots as Mr Andrew Montgomery, Factor for
Argyll Estates presented Alasdair Bisset (34.08) with a Quaiche sponsored by
Argyll Adventure commemorating his first place amongst the military runners. Organiser
Fiona Corner would like to thank firstly Inveraray Jail for sponsoring the
race’s trophies and for support of the staff, Kathy and David Owen for their
very generous donation, the Inveraray Marketing group for the sponsorship of
prizes and medals, the local businesses who donated spot prizes and His Grace
The Duke of Argyll for permission to hold the race in the stunning Argyll
Estate grounds. As with all events the volunteers behind the scene are the
force that drives the event and the marshals, first aiders (First Aid for
Gambia), timekeepers, registration officials were magnificent in every way. The
organisers are also grateful to Argyll Brass for attending and playing
beautifully to the competitors and spectators
