Inveraray half, Quarter and Eighth!

A wee while ago now but the 6th October saw a fantastic turnout for the first Inveraray half, ten km and five km. The route was a straight line course with a turn around point for all competitors along the shores of Loch Fyne. We were joined by several runners from the Mid Argyll group which is always nice. Everyone I think, did themselves proud and ran really well especially the new 5kmers competing for the first time. The half marathoners had a toughish course with the elevation coming right in the middle and a tarmac finish. Liz and Heather led the way closely followed by Kirsten. Fee and Rhona were not too far behind with an emotional finish for the latter as she finished her first half marathon in a grand time and style. I am so grateful to Alison for being a very welcome face at the turn round point with her gel sweets and water bottles, Fiona was our sweep on her bike and did a fab job. Huge thanks to Julie Anne and the Christmas Dove for their extremely generous sponsorship.

Three Mile Trial and hills for beginners!

Really good turn out tonight and great to see Jillian back. The beginner beginners are bowling along with a really good jog/walk session and with a hill (although the way to tackle it was hotly contested!!). The Advanced group did a three mile trial (or three miles point one/two depending on whose GPS we followed!) and the results are impressive. Julie Anne set a PB knocking 30s off her last time and Rhona knocked a MASSIVE two minutes and 6s off her last time. Great times from everyone else and well done Lynsey on your first time trial. Thinking of those preparing for competitions, Penny and Alison have a big training run coming up this weekend and the Corner triathloners are approaching the last three weeks of preparation. The Oban races are also looming at the beginning of next month so exciting times ahead!

New Beginnings, challenges and footwear

New Term, new starters, new goals and for some, new trainers....naming no names (Janet). It is really great to see some new members coming along and the progress that last sessions beginners have made. To anyone who still wishes to come along but feels they may have missed out we now, thanks to Jillian have a regular beginners group alongside the advanced beginners every week. We also have a group on the Thursday which runs (no pun intended!) alongside the intermediate group for those who wish a more steady run out and back. You are free to waft between groups week by week as you feel the need. This is dependant on how many leaders we have week by week so thank you for your tolerance. As always please give us feedback before any issues develop. If you are needing motivation of the technical kind this running App is apparently a helpful tool...doesn't actually do the running for you but does buddy you along!
We are still trying to take advantage of the light nights by getting out and about for the sessions with as much running as possible before we become more confined to the town. Now is the time to make a head torch purchase if you haven't already...no good waiting for Father christmas to bring you one.

DESTINATION CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE...Participation by no means compulsory, would be nice to get as many as possible on board though!
So...18 weeks until Christmas
1. Roughly work out what you would like your weekly running/cycling total to be.
2. Multiply by 18 (weeks till christmas)
3. Find a destination roughly that distance from home and tell us where you are off to!
4. Keep a track of your mileage and share with us where you are on your journey....(if you get an injury and /or a note from your Dr, physic and mum signed in triplicate we may consider allowing you to hop on a bus for a few miles...)

EXAMPLE
I am going to Kirkwall and so 300 miles divided by 18 = 16 miles a week. tonight I did 3 miles and so am three miles from my house round about Argyll Adventure Road end....

ANOTHER EXAMPLE
Average weekly Mileage=5 miles times 18= 90 miles=Inveraray to Fort William.

There was some interest in hosting a 10/5k of our own sometime. If anyone is interested in this can they get in touch and we shall see how it goes.

Finally good luck to Craig this weekend at the Craggy Island Triathlon...the first of the Wild swimmers to take part in a water event...have fun!

Blowing a hoolie

The wind and rain may have been vicious this Saturday but this did not deter our intrepid competitors in various events around and beyond Argyll. Paul made a superb 1/2 marathon debut on hilly Coll with a time of 2:09:08 whilst another island racer Helen braved the storms, and hills for the Skye Quiraing 10k, she had a superb time of under 56 minutes. The inaugural Tarbert ten k proved a challenge with two hill ( there is a theme here!) climbs and a surprisingly warm finish...the times reflect the stiffness of the run and everyone seemed happy with their performance. Toby 42:55 as usual led the way for inveraray jogscotland and despite a fall finished in 5th place, father followed son with Garret 54:29 racing Mid Argyller Iain for the line. Fee was a few minutes afterwards at 58.33 with Janet nursing her sore foot over the finish line in a very acceptable 73.02.The 5km have a great entry and our js girls did us proud with great performances from first timers Cheryl and Laura 35:27. Rosie 31:47put in a great time too but finish of the day goes to Freya 22:53 who raced for the line to come in fourth overall and First Lady home.

Our new beginners block starts tomorrow at 6pm at The Shelter Shed with the Advanced beginners at the same time. Movement between the two groups is flexible and a matter of individual choice week by week. Everyone is very welcome to attend either session. The Thursday intermediate group will be on as usual at 7pm. I have a wee challenge in mind for all groups!

Group night and round up of the year so far

What a fabulous night...thanks to all who came along and ran on Thursday night. So many folk ran their furthest ever and really showed what inveraray jogscotland is all about....pushing yourselves that wee bit further but having a good chat at the same time. All arrived at The George on schedule and in fine form. Special well done to Becs and Francisco who did a magnificent four miles after only a few weeks with the group. It has been a great session from Christmas to Summer and I hope that you have enjoyed it as much as I have. We have had lots of new starters, some have faded away for a while but please be reassured that we will always welcome you back. There is now provision on Tuesdays for a beginners group each session with a more advanced group at the same time for those who choose to go a bit further/ faster. I would like to thank the other leaders especially Penny, Jillian and Alison for all their support in recent months and Janet too who has been a great honorary leader for the beginners. We have two jogscotland babies on the way so very much love and best wishes to Vicky and Wendy. There have been a few injuries around this year but let's hope they are behind us now and everyone is on the mend. The achievements are many and varied with Janet completing her first Dun Na Cuiche race after much dedicated training, Freya took first junior and first local in the same race, and Garret first local male. Linda, Paul, Alison and Fiona flew the flag for us in the Crinan Puffer with Alison, Garret and Fiona representing the ground at the MOK. Toby took on the Polaroid series in Glasgow and achieved 1st junior in three races. The are many goals being set this summer, ten km races ,1/2 marathons and a marathon for Penny and Alison which is great to hear...the 50x5 challenge sparked a few folk off into striving to continue to improve. This session has seen the start of The Inveraray Wild Swimmers, a group anyone is welcome to join in although at the moment possession of a wet suit is a definite advantage! We meet mainly after the Tuesday session, occasionally again through the week but this is posted on Facebook.

Club awards
Moira received the award for most attendances at the Tuesday Group
Janet and Moira shared the award for the most Attendances on the Thursday Night

Inspirational group member
In the end there was a clear winner for this award although there were some very good contenders- I think that it is safe to say that we all inspire each other! A special mention here for Julie Anne and Rhona who have inspired many of you to keep going by their own achievements and constant enthusiasm. The person for whom you voted for in the end is motivating, cheerful and committed. She has a unique take on running and has definitely changed the way that we all look at hills! She has, by upping her own level inspired many of us to do the same and so, in Fiona's words The champion Of the Hills is Janet. And very well deserved too.

Future Plans
If anyone has any ideas/ plans for the direction of the Friday group please let me know. I am happy to re start it after the holidays if there is still a need. I think we need to have more than one or two regular attendees though to make it social and interesting.

Throughout the holidays the Tuesday and Thursday sessions will continue at the usual times with a less formal training structure and more straight runs. There will always be accommodation made for all levels of runner with different options of time/ distance. I am very happy for anyone to suggest a route on Facebook, we sometimes meet at alternative venues over the summer so if you have one in mind suggest away. Please stick a note on Facebook if you are heading out for an evening run or a weekend on and would like some company.

Club tops
New running T shirts are on order a present and will be between £7-8.

Feedback
As always I very much value all your support and feedback. Please continue to let me know how things are going, any advice/ suggestions gratefully received!

Everyone welcome. Dogs welcome too but there are some bits where they have to be on leads and there are several road crossings. The route has a couple of muddy bits (weather dependant), some trail and some tarmac through the Estate. The hills are short and moderate. Need a back marker if anyone would like to volunteer? I can go over the route in more detail. If anyone wants to do a shorter route and run out and meet us then turn and run back with us that would be fantastic.Main group setting off from the school at 11am....Second group set off at about 12 and go the reverse way round (to castle Grounds). Any problems just get in touch. Please sign up on FB or pm me for definite or even possible attendance!!
